The Police in Mukono is investigating Uganda Revenue Authority’s (URA) Manager for Customs Enforcement Operations, Godson Mwesigye, over assaulting an unarmed civilian with the help of his armed Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT/JATF) escort pointing a gun at the civilian.
The assault which was recorded by a group of civilians and has since gone viral on social media, shows a car allegedly belonging to Mwesigye following a saloon car, which parks after a short distance and the occupant moves out of the car.
Mwesigye is then seen moving out of his vehicle and punch the man innthe face who had raised his arms up in the air, as his JATT escort pointed a submachine gun at the civilian.
The eyewitness who were traveling in another car and seemingly friends of the people in the vehicle being attacked are heard saying that the police escorts had shot at the car and the occupant, identified as TG who refused to stop.
“TG has refused to stop, Walai”You call him, that guy is shooting at the vehicle don’t engage”, afande” the occupants are heard shouting in the vehicle.
However, the circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear, with conflicting accounts suggesting either a personal dispute or a disagreement linked to enforcement-related activities.
Last year, then Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) Deputy Zonal Commander, Asp Clive Nsiima Barigye was arrested and spent some time on remand at Luzira Prison over assaulting a female supermarket attendant at Shell Kyanja.
Nsiima assaulted the attendant after she reminded him to pay for two cans of beer and a pack of condoms as he attempted to drive off with a female companion from the supermarket.
A source in the police revealed that the case is being handled by the URA police investigations department.
However by the time of this publication, the police and URA were yet to issue a formal statement on the matter.
