The International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court has granted bail to former Butambala County MP and National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president for Buganda, Muwanga Kivumbi, along with 17 co-accused in an ongoing terrorism case against them.
On Thursday, the ICD presiding Judge, Justice Suzan Okalany, granted Kivumbi a cash bail of UGX 10 million, while his 17 co accused were each granted bail on a cash bail of UGX 1 million.
However court denied bail to six other co accused, after court found that they had failed to present substantial sureties and their bail application was deferred.
“Bail granted to Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi and most of the co-accused people! (Bail application for six applicants deferred) We thank God. Aluta continua!” David Lewis Rubongoya, the Secretary General NUP posted on his x page after the ruling.
The group is facing terrorism charges linked to alleged attacks on a police station and a polling centre in Butambala district, incidents that reportedly left seven people dead.
According to prosecution, Kivumbi along with others at larger between January 11 and January 17, 2026, Kivumbi, coordinated and carried out a series of violent attacks in Kibibi Town Council and Gombe Town Council in Butambala District.
The terrorism charges against the group are contrary to Section 6(1) (a) and Section 3(o) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, Cap 120.
The hearing of the terrorism case is set to continue before the International Crimes Division.
