The former Speaker of Parliament Anitah Among, has withdrawn from the speakership race and grovelled before President Yoweri Museveni and the National Resistance Movement (NRM), as the probe into her alleged corruption deepens.
On Sunday, security operatives led by the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), sealed off Among’s homes in Kigo and Ntinda suburbs, hours after they searched her Nakasero residence in search of evidence in the ongoing probe.
However on Monday, Among, through her official X handle announced her withdraw from the race, noting that she made the decision after wide consultations, deep introspection, and a wish to maintain harmony and clarity with her party.
“I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament. I am greatly indebted to H.E Kaguta Museveni, my party, the @NRMOnline, and members of the 11th Parliament for giving me the opportunity to serve as Deputy Speaker and Speaker” she posted.
She further thanked, the NRM party for supporting her through the previous term and pledged to support Hon Oboth Oboth, who was recently endorsed by Museveni in the speakership race.
“I pledge my total support to the candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the Party, and Implore all colleague MPs of the 12th Parliament to do the same. I shall remain available to the service of my country as the party and the President may assign me” she said.
Among, has further pledged to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations as initiated by the relevant organs of the state to get to the root of all the allegations raised.
In recent days, several raids have been carried out on her properties, which are reportedly part of a President Museveni-sanctioned probe, into the politician over corruption and other alleged offenses, which authorities have yet to disclose publicly.
