The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has condemned the continued violations of all forms by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the ongoing civil war which has spun close to three years now in Sudan,
Following a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Republic of the Sudan Dr. Kamil El-Tayeb Idris, on the prevailing peace and security situation in the country, the secretariat through the Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, condemned the violations and reaffirmed its full support for the unity and sovereignty in Sudan.
“The IGAD Secretariat, through its Executive Secretary, condemns all forms of violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces and reaffirms its full support for the unity and sovereignty of the Republic of the Sudan, as well as its existing national institutions” the statement reads.
IGAD further reiterated its readiness to welcome Sudan back into its institutional framework in order to work towards bringing peace in the country.
“IGAD calls upon Sudan to return to the Organisation and welcomes Sudan’s National Initiative to bring peace and stability in the country”.
In January 2024, Sudan exited the regional bloc in protest of the inclusion of RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan in a heads-of-state summit held in Kampala, Uganda.
The Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias Hemedti led RSF have been engaged in civil war with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacement of millions of people.
According to local media reports, on Wednesday, dozens of people were killed in a drone attack on on Dilling town in Kordofan state, in South Sudan.
