President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Justice Flavian Zeija as the new Chief Justice of Uganda.
In a statement released on Thursday, President Museveni in exercise of the powers vested in him under Article 142(1) of Constitution, and acting on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, appointed Hon. Justice Flavian Zeija as the Chief Justice of the Republic of
Uganda.
The appointment follows the submission of Hon. Justice Flavian Zeija’s name to the Parliament of Uganda for approval, which Parliament duly granted in accordance with the Constitution.
Zeija’s appointment comes shortly after Owiny-Dollo officially retired from office on January 18, 2026, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
On Thursday, Parliament’s appointments committee led by Speaker Anitah Among convened and vetted Zeija for the position after his appoontment by President Museveni.
Retired Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo’s tenure as Chief Justice began in August 2020, and was marked by efforts to promote judicial discipline, reforms, and collegiality within the judiciary.
Justice Zeija, a highly respected lawyer, academic, and jurist, steps into the role as the country’s top judicial officer.
