The Ruhinda North County, Member of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, has retained his position as the Deputy Speaker in the 12th parliament, following a landslide victory during the elections held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The newly elected speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Oboth Oboth, declared Tayebwa the winner, after scoring 457 votes to defeat the Fort Portal Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato, who got 45 votes and Dokolo District Woman MP Sarah Aguti Nyangkori, who got 14 votes.
Three of the votes were declared invalid after the elections.
While addressing legislators after taking oath, Tayebwa apologised to the nation for lapses in the previous parliamentary term and vowed to clean up the house to regain public trust.
“I promise, honourable colleagues, that I know all the corners of the house. I know where we need to clean up. I know where we need to maintain the status quo, and I will be sharing this information with my senior leader, the right honourable Oboth, so that we can build a parliament which we are all proud of” he said.
Tayebwa further urged legislators to work together and support government in it’s appropriation and legislative proposals, in order to lift people out of poverty.
Tayebwa’s remarks come at time when the former speaker of Parliament Anita Among, is facing investigations into alleged corruption, accountability, illicit enrichment and money laundering.
