After more than a decade away from the international scene, the Uganda women’s Table Tennis team has qualified and is set to represent the country at this year’s World Table Tennis Championships (WTTC) in Doha, Qatar.
In a statement released on Thursday, President of the Uganda Table Tennis Association, Jjagwe Robert noted that Uganda had not qualified for the competition in 15 years ever since competition in the WTTC became a matter of qualification.
“However due to the excellent performance of our players Jemimah Nakawala and Parvin
Judith Nangonzi in several competitions held last year, Uganda finally qualified and has effectively returned to participation in this top Table Tennis Competition” he said.
Jjagwe added, “The competitions at which our players gathered enough qualification points include the Regional Senior Championship held in Uganda last year in April 2024, the All Africa Games held in Ghana also held in March last year and the Africa Senior Championships held in Ethiopia last year as well in October 2024”.
Mr Jjagwe further said the qualifications are a result of the hard work and great results like winning Gold at the Regional Senior Championships and a Bronze Medal at the Africa Senior Championships.
“The Bronze in itself came after a whopping 25 years since Uganda last landed a Continental Medal. The players’ qualification is down to majorly three aspects. That is Love for the TT Sport, Hard Work and very good Discipline”.
The team will leave for Doha, Qatar tomorrow Friday, 16th May aboard Qatar Airways and they will return on 25th May following completion of the WTTC.
