The Luzira Magistrate’s Court has granted a UGX 3 million non-cash bail to former Minister for Ethics and Integrity, Miria Matembe, who is charged with promoting sectarianism contrary to section 38 (1) (d) of the penal code Act, cap 128.
The Grade One Magistrate’s Court granted bail to Matembe on grounds of ill health, advanced age, and presumption of innocence, after several days in detention following her seizure by armed security operatives.
While Matembe was granted non-cash bail of UGX 3 Million, her four sureties were also each bonded UGX 3 million non cash.
However the bail application faced several adjournments, before the magistrate delivered a 13 page ruling.
Initially Matembe, requested to speak before court but the Magistrate stated that she would grant the accused time to speak only if they accept to receive the bail ruling tomorrow.
In that regard, the defence team asked the accused to let the Magistrate go ahead and prepare the ruling.
Following the last adjournment, Magistrate Sheila Gloria Apio, granted bail to senior citizen Matembe and scheduled August 19th for mention of the case.
According to prosecution, Miria Matembe in the month of June, 2026, in Nakawa division, within Kampala district, through DK TV Uganda platform, made or uttered statements that all our taxes are being spent on the Banyankole women ministers, which statements are likely to promote hostility, hatred or ill will against members of the Banyankole tribe.
