The High Court in Kampala has sentenced two men to a total of 80 years imprisonment, with each man being handed a 40 years prison term, after they were found guilty of the murder of a boda boda rider Derrick Muwonge in Mengo, a Kampala suburb, on June 29, 2019.
The court presided over by Justice Alex Ajiji, sentenced, Aloysius Tamale alias Young Mulo and John Bosco Mugisha alias Kayihura, over the gruesome murder of a boda boda rider in Mengo which was captured on CCTV on June 29, 2019.
In the video that shocked the country, one killer was seen choking Muwonge from behind, while his accomplice struck his head repeatedly with a hammer to steal his motorcycle.
During mitigation, the prosecution led by state Attorney Happiness Ainebyona, asked court to impose the death penalty or another harsh sentence on two convicts, for the murder.
However the convicts asked for court’s leniency, with Tamale revealing that he still had hope to become the President of Uganda.
Justice Ajiji sentenced the each of the men to a 40 year’s imprisonment for the murder.
Tamale and Mugisha, are already serving a 70-year prison sentence each for a separate aggravated robbery of boda-boda riders.
Justice Ajiji noted that the new 40-year sentence would run on top of the existing 70-year term, bringing each convict’s total sentence to 110 years.
