The Kyambogo University and Makerere University student’s communities are in grief after students attached to both higher institutions of learning perished in separate accidents recently.

According to the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety PRO SP kananura Michael, Cherotich Anita Scovia a student at Kyambogo University pursuing a Bachelor of Environmental Science Technology and Management, was involved in a fatal road crash in Bweyogerere.

“She was traveling on a boda- boda that collided with a moving vehicle resulting in her immediate death” he said.

Kananura noted that the deceased’s body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-mortem as efforts continued to contact her family.

In another incident, Makerere University College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) announced the passing of Kavuma Michael Tevin, a student of MSc. in Technology Innovation and Industrial Development.

“The Principal, management, staff, and student community of @MakCEDAT regret to announce the passing of Kavuma Michael Tevin, a student of MSc. in Technology Innovation and Industrial Development” the statement read.

However the University didn’t divulge details into the exact cause of his death, it noted that burial arrangements will be communicated later.

According to reliable sources, Kavuma was knocked dead near Kawempe Police Station on Friday evening and his body taken to Mulago City Mortuary.

The two student’s deaths by knocking has raised concern among student communities about their safety while moving on the roads in both universities.

During the release of the 2025 Police report on Monday, the AIGP Traffic & Road Safety, AIGP Niwabiine Lawrence revealed an increase of 3.7 percent in recorded traffic crashes with a total 26,044 road traffic crashes reported last year compared to 25,107 crashes recorded in 2024.

“Fatal crashes also increased from 4,434 in 2024 to 4,602 in 2025, while serious and minor crashes increased by 3.3 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively” he said.

AIGP Niwabiine noted that although road crashes continue to increase, the trend over the past five years indicates that the rate of increase gradually slowed.
