The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent secretary Mr Vincent Bagiire, has revealed that 43 Ugandan students have been evacuated from Iran to Turkey as the joint US/Israel war against Iran escalates.
“We have primarily students that have been studying in Tehran, they accessed some scholarships to go and study in Tehran. And these students are by and large the Ugandan community that our embassy in Tehran has constantly and consistently been in touch with” he said.
Mr Bagiire noted that the same group of students was caught up in last year’s June attacks on Iran and had to be evacuted from the country.
“We had around 43 students in universities in Tehran and the embassy quickly organized them and took them by road to the Turkish-Iran border, where they have been received by our mission in Ankara, as we speak right now, they ended up on the Turkish soil, the Turkish territory” he said.
Bagiire noted that currently, government is making plans to have the evacuated students back in the country by the end of the week.
However Bagiire declined to divulge information on an alleged a Ugandan national who was allegedlly injured in the escalating bombings.
“We’ve heard of one incident in the UAE, the United Arab Emirates, but we don’t have the facts yet, so we can’t speak to it authoritatively. We are waiting for our embassy there to give us some details. But as of now, we cannot comment, we cannot say with certainty that the Ugandan is so-and-so, and this is where he or she was injured. So we are waiting on our embass” he said.
On Saturday, US/Israel jointly attacked Iran leading to retaliatory attacks by Iran on Gulf States with America.
