The Buganda Kingdom Premier Charles Peter Mayiga, has revealed that the restoration of the Kasubi Tombs, the burial grounds for Buganda kingdom kings and other members of the royal family is complete.
On Friday, Premier Mayiga toured the completed works escorted by Buganda Kingdom officials and ministers before addressing media on the developments.
“The Tombs caught fire on 16th March 2010 and their reconstruction started on 13th May 2014, we have taken a lengthy time in renovating these tombs to ensure we follow and meet all the precarious steps and cultural norms attached to the construction works of the tombs” he said.
Premier Mayiga noted that the restoration of the UNESCO World Heritage site has cost over UGX 13 billion which has been a collaborative effort led by the Buganda Kingdom, Japan, the Ugandan Government, UNESCO and all people of Buganda.





Some of the restored sites include; the main tomb, Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, which has been rebuilt with traditional materials and techniques, and numerous small houses housing the Tombs, and advanced firefighting equipment has been installed to protect the site from future damage.
Premier Mayiga further revealed that there are a few works remaining on the main tomb which will be done in a short period which he will communicate to the public.
Premier Mayiga further thanked King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II for guiding the restoration process of the tombs.
