President Yoweri Museveni, has granted an official burial to late renowned playwright, actor, musician and theatre director Alex Mukulu, who passed on, on Saturday aged 72.
According to a statement issued by the Minister for Presidency Milly Babalanda, on her X handle, the National Organizing Committee (NOC) is engaging with the bereaved family to organise a befitting send-off on August 20, 2026, in Kijabijjo, Gayaza.
“Dear friends, I wish to inform you that the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Gen.
@KagutaMuseveni, has granted an official burial to the fallen statesman, Mr. Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu” she posted.
“Our deepest condolences go to the family, friends, colleagues in the Performing Arts Industry, and Ugandans at large. May the soul of Alex Mukulu rest in eternal peace. BMB” she posted.
Mukulu will be remembered for his remarkable contribution to Uganda’s theatre and entertainment industry, as well as his strict and uncompromising character on stage while directing plays.
He was born in 1954 and studied film and drama at Makerere University.
His notable works include 30 Years of Bananas, Wounds of Africa, The Guest of Honour, Muzukulu wa Kabangala and Opera Bakisimba.
Mukulu also performed Journey to Self-Realisation at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala.
Mukulu returned to theatre in 2024, during the World Theatre Day celebrations that were held at the National Theatre in Kampala, with his African adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless classic, Romeo and Juliet after being away for 17 years.
The news of his passing, sparked an outpouring of tributes from Uganda’s creative community, celebrating his decades-long contribution to theatre and the arts.
