The City Hall Magistrates court has adjourned the case into the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates forward, Sydney Gongodyo, after prosecution informed court that investigations into the incident were still ongoing.
Gongodyo passed on early this month, after succumbing to injuries, following an alleged mob attack in Nakawa division.
On Tuesday, State Attorney Grace Akite informed court that some of the forensic findings reportedly indicated that some of the suspects arrested did not match the evidence gathered during the investigation.
“It’s not like a one person, it’s a group of forensics that we are trying to look like the photos, the forensic was done, but it wasn’t bringing out the person clearly, so, they are still doing the observation over the same” she said.
The Magistrate Grade One, Edgar Karakire further remanded the quartet, who include Obed Mugwisa, Elly Mundoni, Joseph Owino, and Henry Kabugo, until July 23rd, when their murder case, which is contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128, will come up again for mention.
“As you have head state, because the inquiries are still ongoing, they are still attempting to arrest more people. I have to remand you in custody pending completion of that exercise. At which point, I will send you to the High Court for your case to be heard” he said.
Mr Isaac Kapalaga Kimeze, counsel holding a watching brief for the Uganda Rugby Union, told journalists after the court session that the rugby governing body remains actively involved in efforts to ensure justice is served.
“We are working closely with the police to support ongoing investigations and facilitate the arrest of additional suspects linked to the case,” Kimeze said.
