The Stanbic Black Pirates, who are the first Ugandan Rugby Club to reach the Enterprise Cup final in over 50 years, are now seeking to become the first club to win it since the defunct kampala Rugby Club in 1970.
Stanbic Black Pirates are set to face off with Kabras Sugar this Saturday at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, in what is set to be a thrilling finale.
Black Pirates is the only Ugandan side who advanced from the quarterfinal stage of the competition, which began with Heathens, Buffaloes and KOBs as the other representatives.
While addressing media during their send off, the pirate’s assistant coach Martin Karugonjo revealed that winning the Enterprise Cup Finale, would be a culminating achievement for the team, which has in recent months seen them riding a wave of confidence, with dominant displays on the field.
“They have played a lot of international rugby and they’ve given a good account of themselves. So now this is something for them that they own as a club and like you rightly pointed out many of them have played together for the better part of 15 years.
He added, “We’ve got broad shoulders. We are glad to be carrying the mantle. We’ve done everything we need to and we are focused on the job at hand”.
During the tournament, the Black Pirates stunned a number of rugby fans and critics after they defeated Kenyan giants KCB Rugby in the quarterfinals, with a narrow 11-10 victory at Wankulukuku, which turned out to be a critical moment for their campaign.
The Black Pirates, will now head into the final, not only to represent the team and huge Kings Park Arena fan base but also the pride of the whole Ugandans Rugby fraternity.
The 26 man squad captained by Isaac Massanganzira, set off for the tournament on Wednesday and were flagged off by the team’s official sponsor Stanbic Bank at Crested Towers.
