Six have people have been confirmed dead, while several others remain severely injured after a Nile Star Bus collided with a trailer lorry at Purongo Town Council in Nwoya district, along the Pakwach-Olwiyo- Karuma Highway, in the wee hours of Monday.
According to reports, the bus registration number registration number UBP 736U carrying 67 passengers was traveling from Arua to Kampala, when it crashed into the lorry registration number SSD 498C, carrying fish destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo at around 1:30 am.
According to the Nwoya District RDC Christopher Omara, a number of the injured passengers have been admitted to Anaka General Hospital.
In an official statement, the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety PRO SP kananura Michael has revealed that the death toll has now risen to seven people.
“Four passengers died instantly at the scene, sixteen others sustained injuries and were rushed to Anak Hospital while three additional victims later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to seven” he said.
SP Kananura said eyewitnesses onboard reported that the driver had been driving recklessly throughout the journey.
“Despite raising concerns, passengers were allegedly dismissed by the conductor instead of appropriate action being taken” he said.
Kananura revealed that the driver of the ill-fated Nile Star Bus, one Abugo Mandella Kadin has been arrested to assist in the police investigations.
