The Uganda Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael kananura has revealed how the recently announced collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Works on the use of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) has enabled the force recover a stolen car from Mukono district.
According to a post on his X account on Tuesday, Mr. Kananura said the force recovered a Toyota fielder car number UA 812 AW which had been stolen from Buloba along the Kampala- Mityana road on Monday and found it in Mukono district on Tuesday using ITMS.
“The case was immediately registered at CPS by the vehicle owner, acting swiftly, the police officer who received the report alerted ITMSUG. Through real-time tracking, the system successfully located the stolen vehicle near Ntawo in Mukono, at geographical coordinates latitude 0.392533 and longitude 32.736718” he said.
SP Kananura further noted that the ITMS, is not only instrumental in improving road safety but also plays a vital role in enhancing public security & combating vehicle-related crimes.
When contacted, the ITMS Public Relations and communications Officer Ms Priscah Pearl Ayesiga said it’s essential for drivers to report stolen vehicles immediately to the nearest police not only to initiate an investigation but also increase chances of recovering their vehicles.
“Some people have been arguing on social media, attempting to circumvent the EPS Auto system under the ITMS by removing trackers from vehicles is akin to shooting oneself in the foot, the system isn’t designed to issue tickets based on tracking, but rather to facilitate vehicle recovery in case of loss or theft” she said.
Ms Ayesiga added, “By tampering with the tracker, owners not only risk committing an offense but also undermine their own interests. Even without the tracker, vehicles with registered number plates will still receive EPS tickets. It’s in their best interest to comply with the system and reap its benefits”.
