Uganda’s former chief of military intelligence, Major General James Birungi, has been arrested and detained at the infamous Makindye Military Prison.
According to reports, Birungi faces charges including treason, corruption, and compromised intelligence operations during his time at the helm of the Spy body.
The former spy chief was arrested following months of investigations by a board of inquiry established earlier this year to probe allegations that elements within the UPDF had fabricated or exaggerated bomb threats in Kampala, potentially to access operational funding or cover other illicit activity.
The inquiry led by Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Sam Okiding revealed a pattern of misinformation, abuse of resources, and operational manipulation.
Surces further reveal that came under heightened scrutiny following the appointment of Maj Gen Richard Otto as the new head of Defence Intelligence who initiated internal reviews that reportedly uncovered irregularities implicating Birungi and his close associates.
Birungi is expected to face trial before a military court martial on multiple charges related to treason and corruption and other serious offences.
