The Police in Nakaseke district has arrested 22 suspects in connection with the alleged unlawful possession of wildlife species and suspected wildlife products.
According to the Savannah Region Police spokesperson, ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the suspects were arrested when the car they were traveling in, a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UAV 523K, which was carrying hunting equipment, suspected wildlife products and 22 occupants, was intercepted by officers at a snap checkpoint on Monday at about 11pm on Monday.
“A number of items were recovered and secured as exhibits, including hunting nets, spears, pangas, knives, roots and leaves of unidentified species, smoked and fresh suspected wild meat, three pairs of oribi horns, five bushbuck horns and porcupine quills” he said.
ASP Twiineamazima, noted that the 22 occupants of the vehicle were arrested and detained, awaiting transfer to the relevant Uganda Wildlife Authority for further management.
