At his shrine in Nakawakuka, traditional healer Nsambu Micheal, popularly known as Owomugo Kenge, says women struggling to have children make up a significant part of his patients.
Nsambu, who has practiced traditional healing for more than 20 years, claims that some of the women who seek his services come because of difficulties becoming pregnant.
He describes this as one of the major reasons people visit his shrine.
According to Nsambu, his traditional practice includes helping women whom he describes as barren and assisting them in their quest to have children.
He says some patients later return with positive testimonies, which he considers an important indication of the trust people have developed in his work.
His practice, however, is not limited to fertility-related concerns.
Nsambu says he also deals with other issues brought to him by patients, including what they describe as bad luck, broken families and difficulties finding employment.
His shrine in Nakawakuka is where he conducts his practice and meets patients on a daily basis, apart from Wednesday.
The traditional healer says his patients come from different walks of life and are of different ages.
Social media has also played a role in expanding his reach. Through platforms such as TikTok, Nsambu says people have been able to learn about his practice and subsequently look for him at his shrine.
While modern medicine remains the recognised route for investigating infertility and other reproductive-health problems, Nsambu’s story highlights the continuing place of traditional healing in the choices some Ugandans make when seeking solutions to difficulties with conception.
