The Uganda Police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, has revealed that the Entebbe Division Police has 20 National Unity Platform (NUP) members in custody, to aide investigations into an alleged attack on Kibuku County MP Hon. Kinobere Hebert, and other NRM-leaning mourners during the burial of former Busiro South MP Hon. Matovu Charles in Kungu Lutale along Nakawuka road on Sunday.
“A group of NUP political activists allegedly opposed to the presence of NRM supporters attacked the mourners and damaged Hon. Kinobere’s car, including deflating its tyres. Hon. Kinobere reportedly had to escape from the scene to avoid harm” he said.
Kituuma said this prompted police’s intervention to secure the attacked mourners, including those who had sought refuge, and arrested 20 suspects, who are detained at Entebbe Police Station pending investigations.
Kituuma has further urged the public to respect mourners regardless of political affiliation and refrain from violence, intimidation and destruction of property.
On Saturday, during the Matovu’s requiem Mass, St. Bruno Sserunkuuma Catholic Church, Kasenge, the Matovu’s father, Mr Vincent Bukenya, said that doctors at Rubaga Hospital who initially treated his son, revealed to him that he was poisoned.
“Even satan kills, it’s satan that has killed Matovu, because when he was being treated the first time at Rubaga Hospital, the doctors informed us that he had been poisoned” he said.
He added, “And yet in the past, they had brutally beaten him, when he was returning from the campaign”.
Matovu passed away on Thursday night at Mulago Hospital after a sudden illness.
