The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety in collaboration with Kampala Metropolitan Police, has arrested 92 drivers, during a targeted drink-driving operation on Friday across five operational areas within the Kampala Metropolitan area.
The PRO Traffic Police SP kananura Michael, revealed that 15 suspects were arrested along Kira Road, 16 in Kabalagala, 20 along Jinja Road, 18 in Kawempe and 23 in Katwe.
“These operations are conducted over the weekends, particularly on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays when increased social activity often involves alcohol consumption” he said.
Kananura noted that the 92 suspects apprehended in a single night within the five divisions in KMP alone highlight the scale of the drink-driving challenge.
“This reinforces the concern reflected in road crash statistics which show that weekends account for more road crash fatalities than other days of the week” he said.
He further warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol.
“If you drink do not drive. Let us all take responsibility for safer roads and saving lives” he said.
The operation comes a week after a similar operation, netted 124 drivers in areas of Katwe, Kampala Central Police Station, Kabalagala, Nsangi, Kawempe, Old Kampala, Nansana, Jinja Road and Kiira Road.
