The Minister for ICT & National Guidance, Hon Justine Lumumba Kasule, has revealed that cabinet has approved the Food and Agriculture Regulatory Authority Bill, 2026, which is set to improve human, plant and animal health leading to consumer safety and confidence across the country.
Minister Lumumba on Tuesday revealed that the regulatory responsibility on the Bill has been shared between the National Drug Authority and UNBS, which will provide for the regulation of veterinary medicines, Agricultural chemicals, food, and feeds in Uganda.
“It will ensure the food and feeds produced and imported as well as plants and environment are safe (food, feeds and environmental security. Agricultural and veterinary inputs (medicines, agriculture chemicals) on the markets are of the right quality, safe and serve the intended purposes” she said.
Lumumba further noted that the law will also ensure that Uganda’s agricultural and food exports meet local, regional and international market standards and requirements.
“The expected outcome of the Bill include increased market access and competitiveness of Uganda’s agricultural exports to regional and global markets, increased incomes and profits for food value chain actors and Government resulting from improved quality and expanded market for the Uganda’s food” she said.
Lumumba further noted that the Bill will ensure enhanced consumer protection against counterfeits and strengthened food systems and contribution to global health.
