The former Mayor of Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District, Ronald Kalema Basammulekkere, has officially defected from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) pressure group with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Kalema was on Thursday, welcomed into the PLU by Chief Mobilizer, Hon. Michael Mawanda, who revealed that, he is set to become a key mobiliser of the movement.
During the recent swearing ceremony for councillors at the Katabi Town Council Offices, the Wakiso District LC 5 Chairperson, Ian Kyeyune Ssengonzi, revealed that NRM used to hold secret night meetings with some NUP members whom he declined to reveal, during the recent elections, which enabled them to win the seats in Busiro South.
Kalema was initially a member of the Democratic Party (DP), before crossing over to the National Unity Platform (NUP), during the Bobi Wine umbrella wave in 2021 and has now defected to Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
Kalema reportedly decided to join PLU because he had for long sought a party where he could get peace unlike in NUP, where his fellow party members witch- hunted him to the extent of side-lining him for the party flag, forcing him to stand as an independent candidate.
NRM’s Frank Kajura, who was declared winner with 28,271 votes, while his closest rival NUP’s Charles Kalema got 3,641 vote, was recently sworn in as the new Mayor for Katabi Town Council, replacing Ronald Kalema, who served in the position for 10 years.
