The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety PRO SP kananura Michael, has revealed that 11 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured, following an accident involving a lorry and a bus belonging to Kasaba Bus Company that occurred at Lwengo, along the Masaka – Mbarara highway.
Initial reports from first responders, indicated that eight people had lost their lives and several others left injured in the accident
However the Traffic PRO Kananura, has said the death toll from the accident now stands at 11 fatalities in the road crash that occurred on 7th April 2026 at approximately 1:30 am at Kalegero Corner along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District.
“The crash involved vehicle UAL 492H, a bus belonging to Kasaba Bus Company & vehicle UBH 013Q, a Tata lorry” he said.
Kananura noted that the injured victims were rushed to Lyantonde Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the same facility’s mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.
“Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing” Kananura said.
According to a post by Road safety advocate Joseph Beyanga alias Joe Walker, the bus was en route to Kampala from Rukungiri district at the time of the crash.
“SAD DAY ON THE ROADS AGAIN‼ 8 people reported dead and 33 others hospitalised following a traffic crash at Lwego along Masaka – Mbarara highway involving a box body and a bus UAL 492H belonging to Kasaba bus company” Joe Walker posted on his X page.
During the recent release of the 2025 Police report, the AIGP Traffic & Road Safety, AIGP Niwabiine Lawrence revealed an increase of 3.7 percent in recorded traffic crashes with a total 26,044 road traffic crashes reported last year compared to 25,107 crashes recorded in 2024.
“Fatal crashes also increased from 4,434 in 2024 to 4,602 in 2025, while serious and minor crashes increased by 3.3 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively” he said.
