The Foreign Affairs Minister Henry Okello Oryem, has revealed that the President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine, committed treason against the country when he addressed leaders at the 2026 Geneva Summit for human rights and democracy in Switzerland on Wednesday.
“My position as government of Uganda, we are not giving Kyagulanyi the pleasure of a Ugandan Ambassador sitting next to Kyagulanyi at any platform. Kyagulanyi has committed treason. He is going to betray the good names of the people of Uganda to those Bazungu (Whites) out there. So we will not give him the pleasure” he said.
Minister Oryem made the remarks during an interview with Buganda Kingdom’s 88.8 CBS FM on Thursday, as he responded to whether the country would allow, H.E. Mirjam Blaak, Uganda’s Ambassador to the European Union to appear before the European Parliament over the 15 January 2026 general elections.
“Whether I receive it or don’t receive it, it’s not important, what I’m telling you, it will not happen. My ambassador will not be appearing. To appear is to give Kyagulanyi the pleasure, credibility, he will be more noticed, for my ambassador to appear with him in on any platform at all, be it in Uganda or outside Uganda, and therefore my ambassador will not be appearing with him in any platform” he said
Oryem further reasserted that even if the invitation letter came from the European Parliament, he had refused Uganda’s ambassador to Brussels to appear, since this would give credibility to Kyagulanyi’s allegations.
“So What, so What? This is an independent government ruled by the NRM government, by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who just recently won the election by over 70% vote support by the people of Uganda. Why should it be shaken by some people? This is not the first time Kyagulanyi has been to those people, has it helped him? Wasn’t he there in 2022? He was there in 2022? Did it help him?” Oryem said during the interview.
The EU Parliament summoned Uganda’s ambassador H.E. Mirjam Blaak following growing international concern about reports of human rights abuses, intimidation of opposition leaders and a violent crackdown on post-election protests.
While addressing the Geneva Summit via video on Wednesday, Bobi Wine, called on the international community to place sanctions against President Yoweri Museveni and the First son and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba over alleged gross human rights abuses in the country.
During a meeting in Strasbourg on 12 February, members of the European Parliament passed a resolution condemning the elections, describing them as having been marked by intimidation, fraud, violence and a nationwide internet shutdown.
