Civil Society Activist Sarah Bireete, has been remanded until January 21, 2025 when her bail application will be heard over unlawfully obtaining and sharing personal data belonging to registered voters.
Bireete was on Friday arraigned before Buganda Road court and read the charges which she denied.
According to prosecution, Dr Bireete and others still at large, between the month of January 2025 and December 2025, at various places within Uganda including Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso Districts, unlawfully obtained or disclosed data, National Voter’s Information, controlled or processed by the Electoral Commission, without prior consent of the said Electoral Commission.
Buganda Road court magistrate Jatiko remanded Bireete after the chief state attorney Keko Joan informed court that investigations into the matter were still ongoing and needed time to respond to a bail application by Dr Bireete’s defense team.
“Prosecution deserve a right to make a reply to the bail application this being a case that has been brought to court by them. Prosecution is granted time to make a reply to this application. The application will be revisited on January 21, 2026. The accused person will be kept on remand until then,” Jatiko ruled.
Dr Bireete’s formal charging before the court on Friday comes days after her highly publicised arrest by joint security personnel from her home on December 30, 2025.
