The Alliance for Transformation (ANT) presidential flag bearer, Gen Mugisha Muntu, has called on government to ensure justice is served to all in order to ensure that the country remains in peace.
“You can have an army, intelligence services, you can have police as we do have them, as we’ve had them in the past like many African countries have but when there’s no justice, eventually you will find that you have been building on quick sand” he said.
Gen Muntu, the fifth candidate to be nominated to stand for presidency in next year’s polls made the remarks while addressing journalists shortly after he was duly nominated by the Electoral Commission to contest in the upcoming 2026 General Election on Wednesday.
“We intend to build sustainable peace in this country because we want to focus on justice so there’s a rock firm foundation on the basis of which our people can go around doing their own thing whether you have some to call in government when you have a problem”
Muntu further called on government to ensure justice is served to all political prisoners currently incarcerated in different prisons across the country including veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye.
“Today you’re in power, tomorrow you’re not, deal with those who are not with you in a manner in which you would want them to deal with you when you’re out there and they are in there, that’s simply logic. Dr Col Kizza Besigye has been incarcerated beyond the mandatory bail period 180 days past, a period within which if they had any investigations as they were saying, they should have proceeded with the case, they have not” he said.
Gen Muntu noted the need to build systems where everybody is below the law including the president of the country.
“Government should act, if they have got any evidence, they should proceed with the case. Dr Kizza Besigye should be in his home enjoying his freedom, it’s not only Besigye, there are many young people of NUP who are in Prison” he said.
Muntu added, “If you have cases, take them to court and argue your case not to incarcerate them in prisons without trial or pass a law and then we know, but masquerading behind the law as you manipulate it is one of the most dangerous things that we can have, we saw it happen in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s it failed, even now it will fail”.
