NUP’s Winifred Nakandi has withdrawn from the contest for the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag for Kampala Woman MP ahead of the 2026 General Election over alledged irregularities in the in the party’s recent vetting process for local government candidates.
While addressing media today in Kampala, Nakandi alleged that the party’s harmonisation process favours certain candidates.
“This decision is uncomfortable, it is painful, it is undesirable, but it is necessary. After having witnessed the events that unfolded in the process of issuing flags to candidates of local governments, politicians of LC3 and LC5 councillors, it is only imperative that we recognize the loopholes in the system and not wish to benefit from them” she said.
She added, “It would be hypocritical of us if we know these things, if we look for these irregularities in our system and we wait to benefit from them. That’s why today I’ve decided to withdraw my interest in the NUP flag for the position of woman MP”.
Nakandi, who was competing for the NUP endorsement alongside incumbent Shamim Malende, Zahara Luyirika, and Agnes Namagembe said she will announce her next political move soon.
Nakandi is the second NUP Member of Parliament aspirant who has withdrawn from the party’s MP flag after Makindye East Member of Parliament Hon Nyeko Derrick recently quit the race to attain the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket flag bearer for the seat in the 2026 elections.
