The International Crimes Division of Uganda’s High Court has dismissed terrorism and treason charges against 36 members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction who were arrested last July by security operatives in kisumu, Kenya where they had gone to attend a conference.
Upon arrest and detention by authorities in Kenya, the group was then deported to Uganda where the government charged them with the two offenses under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
According to the High Court ruling, the state lacked sufficient evidence to proceed with the prosecution.
The groups lead counsel Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago noted that the judgment was a demonstration that courts can uphold justice even in politically sensitive cases.
