14 people have been confirmed dead while 28 others have sustained injuries, after an Isuzu bus registration number UBE 110H belonging to OPIT Travellers Company, rammed into Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer number KBS 564D/ZE 7948 at Bobi trading centre along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
According to the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety spokesperson, SP Kananura Michael, the fatal crash occurred on Tuesday at around 09:34 pm.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the bus who was allegedly speeding attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer” he said.
SP Kananura noted that the injured victims have been rushed to various medical facilities for treatment and investigations are underway into the accident.
“We urge all motorists to strictly observe speed limits especially during night when visibility is reduced” he said.
Kananura further advised drivers to remain vigilant, anticipate pedestrian movement in trading centres and always drive at speeds that allow them to stop safely.
