The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has ordered the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Uganda National Mining Company (UNMC) to immediately interdict Dr. Gerald Banaga-Baingi, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Ms. Lelia K. Bwambale, the Chief Corporate and Legal Affairs Officer/Company Secretary.
In a statement issued late Thursday, the inspectorate noted that the interdiction is intended to facilitate investigations into allegations of maladministration, financial mismanagement, and abuse of office involving the two officials
“The Chairperson of the Board of Directors has further been directed to make interim arrangements to ensure the uninterrupted discharge of their functions during the period of interdiction” the statement read.
According to Article 230(2) of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and Section 13(6) of the IG Act, Cap 32,:
“The Inspector General of Government may, during the course of his or her duties or as a consequence of his or her findings, make such orders and give such directions as are necessary and appropriate in the circumstances.”
The inspectorate further noted that the public interest demands that while investigations against an officer are ongoing, he or she should be suspended from exercising the powers and functions of the office to avoid interference with the investigations.
