The former Minister for Ethics and Integrity, Miria Matembe has been charged with promoting sectarianism contrary to section 38 (1) (d) of the penal code Act, cap 128.
The 73 year old, who has been since in public ever since heavily armed security operatives raided her home on Wednsday last week, was visibly weak as she was supported by female prison officers from the security vehicles to the Grade One Magistrates Court Luzira court room.
According to prosecution, Miria Matembe in the month of June, 2026, in Nakawa division, within Kampala district, through DK TV Uganda platform, made or uttered statements, that all our taxes are being spent on the Banyankole women ministers, which statements are likely to promote hostility, hatred or ill will against members of the Banyankole tribe.
On Sunday, the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi kainerugaba, said Matembe who had been missing for days was under arrest over impersonation.
According to Muhoozi, Matembe had been impersonating as a sister to President Yoweri Museveni.
“Matembe has been arrested for impersonation. Mzee only has one sister. Auntie Kajubiri” he posted on X.
Matembe’s appearance in court, comes days after armed security operatives seized the Executive Director of Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA), Ms Eunice Musiime and Dr Sarah Bireete, the Executive Director of the Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG), from Musiime’s residence on Sunday for several hours before releasing them.
The armed operatives didn’t give a specific reason for the arrests, but a number of people linked the seizures to Miria Matembe.
The Luzira court has paid a deaf ear to her cries of pain and begging for specialized treatment and remanded her to Luzira Prison until July 1st, (tomorrow) when her bail application will be heard.
