The Minerals Protection Unit, led by the Zonal Commander, on Tuesday closed an illegal gold mining site located in Mabuka Village, Bukana Sub-county, Namayingo District, following a partial cave in of the mine over the weekend.
According to a statement released by the force on Wednesday, the operation which started at 2:12 pm, was aimed at protecting the lives of individuals who have been engaging in illegal mining activities that pose significant risks to their safety.
“The decision followed an incident that occurred on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at about 1:00 p.m., when six people were rescued after becoming trapped underground when part of the mine caved in and collapsed during mining activities” the Police said.
The force noted that the operation is ongoing, including during the night hours, to ensure that all individuals vacate the site and that no further illegal mining activities take place.
