The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Lady Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala, has confirmed that the inspectorate is carrying out investigations on Speaker Anita Annette Among’s wealth, following recent public complaints about her lifestyle.
While addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on Friday, Justice Naluzze confirmed receiving a petition from six lawyers recently, seeking her to provide them with details of Speaker Anita Annette Among’s wealth after she allegedly failed or under declared her wealth.
“I just want to confirm that we received the complaint. When we receive complaints, we have a procedure for processing them. We received the complaint and we are processing it” she said.
Justice Naluzze, further called upon members of the public to support enforcement of the Leadership Code by reporting public officers with suspected unexplained wealth, flamboyant lifestyles, or undeclared assets for investigation.
“The declaration of incomes, assets, and liabilities by public officers is mandated under the Leadership Code Act enacted in 2002 and amended in 2017 and 2021” she said.
On Wednesday, a group of lawyers petitioned the IGG alleging that Speaker Among breached the leadership code act, chapter 33 of the constitution, after she declined to declare her wealth.
“Section 4 of the aforesaid Leadership Code Act, requires a leader to, every two years, during the month of March, submit to the Inspectorate a written declaration of the leader’s income, assets and liabilities in the prescribed form, breach of which attracts penalties, including demotion, dismissal from office, and forfeiture of the un- and/or under declared assets” the petition reads.
The petition further reads, “We accordingly lodge this complaint regarding failure to declare and/or under-declaration of wealth by the aforementioned Anita Annette Among, and hereby request you, as provided for by Section 22 of the Leadership Code Act, to furnish us with her declaration, if any”.
The lawyers include Andrew Karamagi, Math Mercy Munduru, Kato Tumusiime, Gift Grace Achille, Praise Aloikin and Godwin Toko further expressed readiness to assist the IGG in conducting the investigations at the earliest time possible.
