The Busia District Police has in custody a 40 year old man identified as Godfrey Were, alias Nasaye after he attempted to attack officers with a panga at Busia Police Station on Thursday morning.
According to eyewitnesses, at around 6am, Were, a resident of Mugungu B in Eastern Division, Busia Municipality approached officers at the police counter as though he wanted to file a complaint, before suddenly pulling out a panga which he had hidden inside his gumboots.
Were is said to have swung the panga at an officer who was at the counter but missed him three times and instead cut the counter table.
It was then that officer reportedly first fired warning shots into the air before shooting the suspect in the right leg after he allegedly persisted with the attack.
The Busia DPC, SSP Peter Mugabi said upon interrogation, Were denied attacking the police officers and rather revealed, that he gone to the police station to deliver a message of repentance.
“I am ‘God’, and I was at the police station to know who they serve and to make them repent their sins” he narrated.
Were who had tied pieces of cloth on both hands, which police suspect could be linked to witchcraft practices, was also found in possession of bundles of marijuana.
SSP Mugabi further noted that the suspect was transferred to Busia Health Centre IV, for treatment as investigations into the incident continue.
