The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro once again, citing concerns over potential interference with witnesses and ongoing investigations.
Grade One Magistrate Frank Namanya further remanded Mufumbiro to Luzira Prison who is charged with inciting violence on the basis that if released, he would have access to the same platforms as the as the party’s deputy spokesperson that he allegedly used to commit the offense hence denying him bail.
Mufumbiro had presented sureties including his father, wife and Member of Parliament before the courts of law but his worship Namanya denied him bail despite acknowledging that all the sureties presented by Mufumbiro were substantial and met the legal requirements for bail.
Prior to the ruling, Mufumbiro who addressed press while handcuffed urged people to vote for the NUP Principal Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu for President in next year’s polls.
“Vote Kyagulanyi Robert Sentamu as your president, vote Balimwezo as your Lord Mayor and of course those people of Nakawa East constituency Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro as your member of Parliament, I will stand for what is right, what is true and I will make sure this country gets back to constitutional order” he said.
Mufumbiro added, “The revolution is on, the mission is generational, we can’t turn it back, it’s an idea, we need to be strong, firm, committed and resilient to all sundry in this country, we should struggle and fight for our nation”.
Mufumbiro who was charged with incitement to commit an offence also faces a separate charge of unlawful drilling before the Kawempe Magistrate’s Court in Kanyanya, where proceedings are ongoing.
“Supporting Bobi Wine is not a crime. I am not a criminal, and I am not on trial, it is my liberty that is on trial” he said.
Following the court ruling, party spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi told media that even though Mufumbiro remained in detention, the party will campaign on his behalf as he bids for the Nakawa East Member of Parliament.
“Later in the afternoon, we shall be at Mbuya 1 to launch his campaign for the position of Nakawa East MP. Even though he is incarcerated because of persecution (not prosecution), we shall hit the ground on his behalf” Ssenyonyi said.
The case has been adjourned to December 2, 2025 for further mention.
