Busoga Sub region is mourning the passing of Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jinja on Wednesday.
Bishop Wamika’s passing, who was the first African Bishop of Jinja Diocese was announced on Wednesday evening by the Diocesan Chancellor, Fr. Gerald Muto, who described the development as a great loss to the Church and the faithful.
“It is with deep sorrow and Christian hope in the resurrection that the Diocese of Jinja announces the passing of our beloved shepherd, Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, Bishop of Jinja, who passed away today,” Fr. Muto stated.
Fr Muto further noted that a comprehensive burial program will be released soon and called on believers to pray for the deceased prelate.
Bishop Wamika presided over the momentous celebrations of 2023 Martyrs Day.
Bishop Wamika was the first Ugandan to lead the diocese since the arrival of the Mill Hill Fathers in the 1800s.
He succeeded Bishop Joseph Willigers, who served the diocese for four decades.
