Embattled NRM’s Faridah Nambi has accused the newly elected Kawempe North MP Elias Nalukoola of bribing three of her witnesses to withdraw their affidavits in an ongoing election petition against the latter.
Lawyers representing Nambi led by Ahmed Mukasa told the High Court Civil Division that NUP’s Nalukoola together with his lawyers allegedly bribed three witness who include Nathan Kayemba Muwaguzi, Mawumbe George William and Mukasa Ben to withdraw their affidavits in the case.
This according to Mukasa violated rule 19 of the advocate’s professional code of conduct rules.
“Nalukoola and his lawyers engaged themselves in the illegal practice of approaching our witnesses and enticing them in whatever fashion to retract the evidence that they gave the petitioner in support of the petition, the evidence that they purportedly retracted has to do with bribery. They wanted our witnesses who had given clear evidence of bribery to retract their testimonies” he said.
However the Defense lawyers denied the bribery allegations and called for proper investigations into the allegations made by Nambi’s team.
“We don’t believe witnesses would come to us to say we were forced to give evidence and we push them away, at the end of the day a trial or election petition is an investigation and we believe it’s proper that this court investigates the matter on whether these people were actually coerced or not and that rests the case, you can’t deny any person from recanting, it’s their right”.
Justice Bernard Namanya adjourned the hearing to May 5 to allow Nalukoola respond to the matter.
