The management of Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) on Thursday suspended the morning train services from Mukono to Kampala after a Trinity Bus rammed into a train at around 6:30 AM at Namumira Crossing along Katosi Road in Mukono District.
In a statement released on Thursday, URC management noted that the front locomotive was damaged and derailed, which necessitated the suspension of the morning trains.
“No fatalities were recorded on both the train and the bus, our team is currently on site to re-rail the locomotives and ensure resumed operation. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time”.
However URC revealed that it has sent a team on site to retail the locomotives and ensure resumed operation of the passenger train.
The authority further urged road users to drive responsibly around level crossings.
“URC operates trains 24hours a day. This means that, at any one point of the day, a train is crossing a road between Kampala and Malaba, Port bell and Nalukolongo. You are therefore advised to approach level crossings with caution” the statement read.
According to Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, the incident happened when the bus registration number RAH 629B driven by Bulya Erat failed to stop at the railway crossing point and was struck by train registration number 73U32 operated by Henry Munyarurembo.
Onyango said the bus, the train and the operator were taken to Uganda railway offices in Kyetume where the driver is assisting with ongoing inquiries.
