On Monday a delegation, a delegation from the National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi, National Treasurer Benjamin Katana, and other senior party officials picked nomination forms on behalf of the party’s flag bearer, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine to officially mark the beginning of the party’s Protest vote trail.
While addressing journalists after picking the forms, LOP Ssenyonyi, urged security agencies not to disrupt the National Unity Platform (NUP) as the party begins collecting signatures nationwide in preparation for the 2026 presidential elections
“We are reaching out to Ugandans in various districts to secure the signatures needed for our presidential candidate’s nomination. This is a lawful activity, and we appeal to security agencies not to disrupt us as we carry out this exercise” he noted.
In the previous elections Bobi Wine and the NUP faced significant interference while collecting signatures with security forces blocking access to certain districts, allegedly harassed local coordinators and volunteers, and disrupted gatherings meant to mobilize support.
Bobi Wine now joins over 175 aspirants who have so far collected nomination forms, including representatives from more than five political parties such as NRM, FDC, CP, NEED, and Common Man’s Party, among others to contest for the Presidency in next year’s national polls.
Electoral Commission guidelines stipulate that presidential aspirants are required to collect at least 100 signatures from registered voters in each of at least 98 districts across the country, totaling a minimum of 9,800 signatures which are to be submitted to the commission headquarters between September 9 and 22, ahead of the official nomination dates scheduled for September 23 and 24.
