The Israeli Ambassador to Kenya, Michael Lotem, has advised Ugandans stuck in Israel as fighting between Israel and Iran continues to escalate to reach out to Uganda’s embassy in Cairo for evacuation support.
While addressing journalists via a Video Link, Ambassador Lotem said while Israel has made limited provisions for the departure of foreign nationals, Ugandans should work with their diplomatic mission in Egypt to explore available evacuation routes, especially through the land border with Egypt.
“Since I was asked yesterday about Ugandan citizens in Israel, I shared a website run by Israel’s Ministry of Transport, which allows people to register for possible departures,” the ambassador said.
Mr Lotem noted that Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation and may issue further instructions for at least 500 Ugandans who live in Israel.
Ambassador Lotem’s advisory comes a few hours after the United States Embassy in Jerusalem announced a temporary closure of its operations, including consular services, in response to the rapidly deteriorating security situation resulting from the ongoing military confrontation between Israel and Iran.
