Tanzania is in mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband to Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan at around 8 am on Monday.
First Gentleman Hafidh’s death at the age of 75, was announced by the Tanzania Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who revealed that he passed on while receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar.
“Fellow citizens, it is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Honourable Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honourable Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan” he said.
Ndejembi added, “He passed away today, September 7, 2026, at around 8:00 am at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he was receiving treatment for heart disease”.
The late Hafidh Ameir was a renowned an agricultural academic.
He married President Hassan in 1978 and had four children, including daughter Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is a politician in Zanzibar.
