The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has revealed that the authority has made strides in initiatives to promote environmental sustainability in the aviation sector.
While addressing delegates at the 3rd CEO Breakfast and High-Level Meeting on Green Economy, SDGs and Sustainability, held on Wednesday at the UNICEF Conference Centre in Mbuya, Kampala, UCCA’s spokesperson Vianney Luggya revealed that the authority has acquired five Kayoola electric vehicles, development of a State Action Plan to mitigate aviation carbon emissions, participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), and a feasibility study on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as part of it’s efforts towards environmental sustainability.
The meeting which was officially opened by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, was themed “Accelerating Uganda’s Green Economy Transition through Digital Transformation.”

Mr Luggya further highlighted UCAA’s investment in modern air navigation technologies, including the establishment of a national Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) framework, implementation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based navigation procedures in line with ICAO requirements, and Uganda’s participation in regional Free Route Airspace initiatives.
“These innovations enable more direct and efficient flight paths, contributing to enhanced aviation safety, increased airspace capacity, reduced flight distances and fuel consumption, and lower carbon emissions” he said.
He added, “Through these initiatives, UCAA continues to support the integration of digital innovation and environmental sustainability in advancing a safer, more efficient and environmentally responsible aviation sector”.
