The Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for Buganda, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has been granted bail by in a case in which he is accused of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society.
Kivumbi’s release on Tuesday at a cash bail of UGX 3 Million, comes after spending approximately 250 days in detention.
Kivumbi has also been banned from Butambala until his case is resolved.
Kivumbi, the former Butambala County MP is charged with inciting violence and holding an unlawful society, following his seizure by heavily armed security personnel at a police checkpoint in Mpigi District.
On the first count of inciting violence, prosecution alleged that Hon Muwanga Kivumbi Muhammad and others still at large, on the 9th day of July 2026 at Bugoye village, Gombe Ward, Gombe Town Council within Butambala District, while addressing the public gathering, unlawfully incited members of the public to commit acts of violence against government officials and unlawfully overthrow the government of the Republic of Uganda by urging them to support of his plans to wage war against the state’s power.
Prosecution further alleged that Kivumbi on the same day held an unlawful society at his home contrary to section 53 of the penal code act Cap 128.
“Muwanga Kivumbi Muhammad and others still at large, on the 9th day of July 2026 at Bugoye village, Gombe Ward, Gombe Town Council within Butambala District, managed unlawful society by organising, encouraging, or supporting supporting members of the society to rise up against the unlawful overthrow the government of the republic of Uganda” prosecution alleged.
Muwanga Kivumbi denied both charges before the court.
Kivumbi also faces charges of terrorism alongside 23 others at the International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court.
