The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, has revealed that the commission has set Thursday, 17th September as the by- election day to fill the Adjumani West County Member of Parliament seat, following the death of the area legislator Gen Moses Ali last month.
Justice Byabakama, made the announcement on Monday, following a stakeholders meeting for the by-elections of the directly-elected Member of Parliament for Adjumani West Constituency and the Sub County Female Councillor representing Older Persons in Pachara Sub County, Adjumani District.
“Participation in all polling day activities, which are scheduled as follows; Wednesday, 16th September, 2026 will be the Polling Day for the Sub County Female Councillor representing Older Persons in Pachara Sub County, Adjumani District” he said.
He added, “Thursday, 17th September, 2026: Polling Day for the Directly-elected Member of Parliament for Adjumani West Constituency”.
The Adjumani West Parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the area MP and former Second Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda, Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, at Nakasero Hospital on 18th July, 2026.
Justice Byabakama, further revealed that the nomination of candidates will be conducted at the district returning officer’s office, on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th September, while the inspection of candidates’ nomination papers and lodging of official complaints, if any, will be conducted from Tuesday 8th until Monday 14th September.
He further noted that candidates’ campaign meetings shall take place from Wednesday 9th September until Tuesday 15th September.
“I urge you to mobilise the voters to attend the candidates’ campaign rallies so that they make informed choices. I particularly appeal to the prospective candidates to desist from organising supporters into processions marching to and from campaign venues” he said.
Justice Byabakama further warned that campaign gatherings must stop at the designated campaign venue and should not be extended onto public roads.
“I urge the Uganda Police Force to enforce this guideline. I also appeal to the Political Parties and prospective candidates to call upon their supporters to observe law and order, transparency, and fairness aimed at having peaceful, free, fair, and credible elections without any violence” he said.
