The Butambala Magistrate’s Court, has charged former Butambala County MP Muwanga Kivumbi Muhammad, with inciting violence and holding an unlawful society after going missing for 19 days, following his seizure by heavily armed security personnel at a police checkpoint in Mpigi District.
On the first count of inciting violence, prosecution alleged that Hon Muwanga Kivumbi Muhammad and others still at large, on the 9th day of July 2026 at Bugoye village, Gombe Ward, Gombe Town Council within Butambala District, while addressing the public gathering, unlawfully incited members of the public to commit acts of violence against government officials and unlawfully overthrow the government of the Republic of Uganda by urging them to support of his plans to wage war against the state’s power.
Prosecution further alleged that Kivumbi on the same day held an unlawful society at his home contrary to section 53 of the penal code act Cap 128.
“Muwanga Kivumbi Muhammad and others still at large, on the 9th day of July 2026 at Bugoye village, Gombe Ward, Gombe Town Council within Butambala District, managed unlawful society by organising, encouraging, or supporting supporting members of the society to rise up against the unlawful overthrow the government of the republic of Uganda” prosecution alleged.
Muwanga Kivumbi denied both charges before the court.
The court further declined to grant Kivumbi bail when the Leader of Opposition in Parliament and NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi and other party officials were presented as sureties during bail application.
Kivumbi has been remanded until August 11th when the case will come up for further mention and bail application.
Kivumbi also faces charges of terrorisms alongside 23 others at the International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court.
