Former Prime Minister and Ex Presidential candidate, John Patrick Amama Mbabazi has been installed as a Lay Canon of the Church of Uganda by Kinkizi Diocese Bishop, Rt. Rev Dan Zoreka.
The installation that took place at Kinkizi Diocese on Sunday was in recognition of his longstanding service to the Church and the nation.
Bishop Zoreka noted that the honour was bestowed upon Mbabazi in appreciation of his unwavering commitment to supporting the Church and promoting values that strengthen communities.
Church officials described the former Prime Minister as a devoted Christian whose contributions have gone beyond politics to include supporting church programmes, education, community development and national service.
Amama, is a founding member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has in the past served in several political offices over the years including as Uganda’s Prime Minister from 2011 to 2014.
He later contested for the presidency in the 2016 General Election as an independent candidate after parting ways with the NRM.
Amama currently serves as a senior presidential adviser and has also remained active in national affairs through legal practice, mentorship, community initiatives and support for religious institutions.
The title of Lay Canon is awarded to distinguished non-ordained members of the church in recognition of their commitment, leadership, and contribution to the growth of the church and society.
