The Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and Senior Presidential Advisor on Defence, Gen. (Rtd) Caleb Akandwanaho, commonly known as Gen. Salim Saleh, has urged the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to brief the Justice Minister Nobert Mao, on the recent arrest of former Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who is facing charges of misprision of treason.
In a letter to the CDF, dated 28th June, Gen Akandwanaho, urges Muhoozi to give Mao information on Lukwago’s arrest so as he can provide perspective to the public on the occurrence.
“Hon. Mao as Minister of Justice & Constitutional Affairs (Chair of the Cabinet Standing Committee of Human Rights), has a duty to give a sense of perspective to the public concerning the case of Dr. Besigye and any of his accomplices” he said.
He added, “He also has a duty to explain actions by the state security agencies against certain individuals and organisations……. Since he may not be privy to some of the military intelligence. He needs a briefing so that he can in turn respond to any concerns from the public”.

Lukwago, who is also the acting President of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), is currently on remand at Luzira Prison on charges of misprision of treason, alongside the Party Founder and Veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye and his aide Hajj Obeid Lutale.
According to prosecution, between 2021 and November 2024, across various places including Kampala and Nairobi, Kenya, Lukwago knew that high-profile opposition leaders including Col. (Rtd.) Dr. Kizza Besigye, Joel Wakayima, Frank Kihere Atukunda, and Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, intended to commit treason but deliberately failed to inform authorities or prevent the crime.
Lukwago is expected back in court tomorrow June 30th for mention of the case, which coincides with his clients Dr. Besigye and Hajji Obeid appearance before the High Court to start their treason trial.
