Armed security operatives have seized the Executive Director of Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA), Ms Eunice Musiime and Dr Sarah Bireete, the Executive Director of the Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG), from Musiime’s residence on Sunday.
According to eyewitness reports, heavily armed military operatives laid siege to Musiime’s home earlier in the day, where they seized her, together with Dr Bireete, who had reportedly gone to check on her safety, after receiving numerous frantic alerts over the sudden military presence at her home.
The two women society leaders were then bundled into unmarked vehicles and driven away to an undisclosed destination.
The armed operatives didn’t give a specific reason for the arrests, but a number of people linked the seizures to Miria Matembe.
The civil leaders seizure has led to netizens condemning their abduction
The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert kyagulanyi Ssentamu, condemned the abduction, in what he termed as turbulent times.
“Two leading civil society leaders and distinguished lawyers, Dr. Sarah Bireete E.D @ccgea1 and Eunice Musiime E.D @amwaafrika are the latest victims of the ongoing criminality. They have been abducted by the military and driven off to an unknown destination. These are definitely tough times, but the TOUGH PEOPLE OF UGANDA will outlive them. Uganda will be free!” he posted.
As concerns of the fate of the two civil leaders, lingered over a number of activists, the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi kainerugaba, confirmed that outspoken former Minister for Ethics and Integrity, Miria Matembe is under arrest over impersonation.
According to Muhoozi, Matembe has been impersonating as a sister to President Yoweri Museveni.
“Matembe has been arrested for impersonation. Mzee only has one sister. Auntie Kajubiri” he posted on X.
On Wednesday, a joint team of security operatives raided Matembe’s home in Luzira, however they didn’t find her at home, after she allegedly had evaded the home at the time of the incident.
